There are more than thirteen miles of hiking trails that pass through the park.  They vary in difficulty from easy to difficult. Most are less than one mile long, but some trails interconnect to provide longer hikes.  Maps with descriptions of each trail are available at the park office.  Contact us for more information. The following is a list of some of the trails and a brief description of each, along with information about distance, degree of difficulty and blaze.

  • Geological Trail - This trail features many interesting rock formations and faults.  The trail changes grade frequently and varies from rocky to smooth.  This trail can be combined with the Ridge Trail for a loop back to the Stateline Overlook.

    • Trail - 0.35 mile
    • Degree of Difficulty - Moderate
    • Blaze - White

    Grassy Overlook Trail - This trail overlooks Grass Creek on the west side of the Breaks Park. The trail begins near campground B and is a short walk to the overlook.  The trail continues steadily down and merges with Laurel Branch Trail.

    • Trail - 0.5 mile
    • Degree of Difficulty - Easy
    • Blaze - Yellow

    Lake Trail - This walking trail takes visitors along the undeveloped side of Laurel Lake.  This trail joins the Laurel Branch Trail and also connects with the pool and dock areas.  Entry points are at Potter’s Knoll, the visitor center and the dam.

    • Trail - 0.5 mile
    • Degree of Difficulty - Easy
    • Blaze - Orange

    Laurel Branch Trail - This trail follows the entire length of the Laurel Branch stream. It extends from the lower end of Laurel Lake to Grassy Creek. From the lake to The Notches, a rock formation, the terrain is flat and easy. However, the last 0.5 mile of trail becomes a steep, rocky and uneven climb through a mixed forest of hardwoods.

    • Trail - 1.25 miles
    • Degree of Difficulty - Easy to Difficult
    • Blaze - Red

    Overlook Trail - This trail follows along the top of the park’s south rim. This trail offers excellent views of the canyon and the George Washington & Jefferson National Forest. There are several overlooks along this trail including the Stateline Overlook, Clinchfield Overlook and the Tower Tunnel Overlook.

    • Trail - 0.75 mile
    • Degree of Difficulty - Difficult
    • Blaze - Green

    Pine Mountain Trail - The Pine Mountain Trail can be accessed from several different points.  This demanding trail follows the Kentucky and Virginia border and has numerous elevation changes.

    • Trail - 24 miles
    • Degree of Difficulty - Difficult
    • Blaze - Yellow

    Prospectors’ Trail - This hike is approximately 350 feet below the major overlooks and follows the base of the cliffs. The last 0.5 mile of trail becomes rocky.

    • Trail - 1.5 miles
    • Degree of Difficulty - Moderate
    • Blaze - Orange

    Ridge Trail - This is a self-guided nature trail that begins at an easy beginner level and then becomes steep near The Notches. 

    • Trail - 0.5 miles, self-guided
    • Degree of Difficulty - Easy to Difficult
    • Blaze - Blue

    River Trail - This trail offers hikers an extremely steep and rugged terrain with many switch backs that gradually descend to a gentler grade along the river.

    • Trail - 1 mile
    • Degree of Difficulty - Difficult
    • Blaze - Blue
