Rugged Dickenson County is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains. The county has some of the most breathtaking scenery in the eastern United States. The county’s amazing terrain offers fabulous opportunities for recreation.
One example of this is the John W. Flannagan Dam and Reservoir. The Dam offers three campgrounds, five boat ramps, picnic areas, fishing, hiking, hunting, boating, swimming and picnic shelters. During the first four weekends in October, water is released into the Russell Fork River. This provides challenging rapids for rafting and kayaking, ranging in class from three to five plus.
